And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
1 John 2:17
When John writes that the world is passing away it means that the world is going out of existence it won't last forever. The psalmist made a similar statement in Psalms 144:4 "Man is like a breathe and his days are like a passing shadow." The world is a like a parade that is passing by, but one day the parade ends. Yet even though the world is passing away and will not last there is something that lasts forever. Those who seek to do the will of God abide forever. Doing the will of God implies a habit of life. It does not mean that we are perfect but our direction in life is following after Jesus and living for Jesus. Jesus said, "For what profit is it to a man if he gain the whole world and loose his own soul, or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?" Matt.16:26 What a promise to hold onto today that if we live for the will of God we will abide forever.
Take the world, but give me Jesus
All the earths joys are but in name
But His love abides forever
Through eternal years the same.
